Effective October 1, 2009,all persons 16 years of age and older has to hold a New York State freshwater fishing license in order to fish the Hudson River. In addition, if we are targeting a migratory species such as striped bass, all fisherman 16 years of age and older must hold a “marine permit“, which is just another name for a saltwater fishing license.

The above requirements can be met fairly easily at a small additional cost whether you’re a New York State resident or not. The licenses can be obtained for a year, week, or one day. Most retail stores like Wal-Mart, Dicks, Gander Mountain, ect. will have the licenses on hand. You can get the licenses through the New York Dec website, but there could be up to a two week wait.
